Bulgaria resells cheap Romanian electricity at night, MP claims

USR deputy Claudiu Năsui alleges that Romania sells cheap electricity during the day to Bulgaria, which stores the power in large‑scale battery installations and then purchases it back at higher night rates. He says the lack of storage capacity in Romania, combined with fiscal and bureaucratic barriers, prevents prosumers and private investors from buying cheap energy, storing it, and selling it when prices rise.

According to data from Transelectrica, Romania’s total storage capacity is about 599 MW (≈1,130 MWh), whereas Bulgaria has installed over 3.3 GW of storage (≈8.6 GWh). Năsui argues that Bulgaria’s investment in batteries gives it a regional advantage, allowing it to profit from the price differential. He quoted the claim: “Bulgaria cumpără energie ieftină de la noi în timpul zilei, o stochează și ne‑o vinde înapoi seara când aceeași energie e scumpă.” The deputy also criticized double taxation on stored electricity, which he says discourages investment in battery systems.
