Clinical Center of Montenegro introduces new anesthesia method for carotid surgery
The Clinical Center of Montenegro (KCCG) has introduced a modern regional anesthesia method for carotid artery surgeries. The technique involves an ultrasound-controlled cervical block used during carotid endarterectomies, a procedure designed to remove plaque from the carotid artery to reduce stroke risk.
This method has been in use for six months at the Clinic for Anesthesia, Resuscitation, and Intensive Care. Medical professionals noted that the technique allows for the patient to remain conscious, enabling real-time monitoring of neurological status. Other potential benefits include a reduced need for general anesthesia, lower use of systemic anesthetics and opioid analgesics, better pain control, and faster recovery times.
The implementation followed specialized training led by Dr. Dragan Nenadić from Kent & Canterbury Hospital in the United Kingdom and Dr. Nenad Zornjić from the University Clinical Center in Kragujevac, Serbia. To date, several anesthesiologists have successfully performed more than 50 such procedures with satisfactory results.
