Clinical psychologists criticize Balearic Islands health specialization changes
The Clinical Psychologists Platform of the Balearic Islands has criticized a new model promoted by the regional government to incorporate non-specialized professionals into health centers. The group argues that the solution to mental health resource shortages should be to reinforce specialization rather than lowering it.
Critics warn that this measure may divert resources away from patients with severe disorders toward mild cases that do not require specialized clinical intervention. They also expressed concern that social, labor, or family issues might be inappropriately medicalized. The platform noted that due to a lack of published waiting lists for clinical psychology, there are no public indicators to justify the inclusion of non-specialists in primary care. This criticism follows the creation of the 'General Health Psychology' category by IB-Salut in June.
