Clint Eastwood declined role of Superman

Clint Eastwood has revealed that he turned down the opportunity to play Superman during the early development of the 1978 film. Eastwood was considered for the lead role of Clark Kent but ultimately decided the part was not right for him.

Eastwood stated, “That was when they were just starting to think about filming the movie. I thought: ‘Superman? No, no, that’s not for me.’ I’m not saying there is anything wrong with it. That role is for someone, but not for me.”

The decision aligned with Eastwood’s career trajectory, as he was primarily known for playing complex, morally ambiguous characters in westerns and crime thrillers rather than the traditional, moral archetype represented by Superman. The role eventually went to Christopher Reeve, while Gene Hackman portrayed Lex Luthor in the Richard Donner film.
