Clint Eastwood films mark 20 years since Iwo Jima release

The film ‘Flags of Our Fathers’ marks its 20th anniversary, a project by Clint Eastwood that explores the history behind one of the most famous photographs of World War II. The film depicts the events on Iwo Jima, where an Associated Press photographer captured the iconic image of American soldiers raising the flag on Mount Suribachi on February 23, 1945.

Eastwood approached the historical event through a dual cinematic lens, releasing ‘Flags of Our Fathers’ alongside ‘Letters from Iwo Jima’ to present both American and Japanese perspectives. While noted for its historical depth regarding the battle—which resulted in the deaths of 7,000 Americans and 22,000 Japanese—the films saw limited commercial success, earning a combined $46 million at the US box office and seeing low viewership in Germany.
