Closing shutters on holiday increases burglary risk in France

Closing all shutters and fully barricading a house during a vacation can signal an empty home and attract burglars, according to French security experts. The Ademe recommends closing shutters only at night, while police and the "Tranquillité Vacances" campaign advise against a completely sealed house.

Statistics from the Ministry of the Interior show 218,000 homes were burglarized or targeted in 2024, a slight decline from 2025. About 70 % of burglars enter through the front door, and the presence of occupants does not guarantee safety. Experts suggest using timed lights, alarms, and leaving some shutters open to simulate occupancy.
