Clothing care tips for preventing and removing yellow stains
Maintaining white clothing requires addressing both storage habits and specific stain treatments to prevent yellowing. Experts note that yellowing often occurs due to oxidation caused by invisible residues such as sweat, sebum, deodorant, or detergent left on the fabric. Environmental factors, including smoke, cooking grease, and acidic gases from cardboard or certain plastics, also contribute to discoloration.
To prevent storage-related yellowing, it is recommended to ensure garments are thoroughly washed and rinsed to remove chemical films. Additionally, clothes from dry cleaners should be removed from plastic bags and aired for 24 hours before being put away.
For existing sweat stains, which are typically a combination of body oils and aluminum from antiperspirants, a homemade paste can be used. This mixture consists of equal parts baking soda and hydrogen peroxide with one teaspoon of washing-up liquid. The paste should be applied to the stained area with a stiff brush, left to soak for approximately one hour, and then laundered through a standard cycle.
