Cloud migration from DigitalOcean to AWS
Engineers and developers are reporting successful migrations of production platforms and personal blogs from DigitalOcean to Amazon Web Services (AWS), primarily driven by cost efficiency and scaling requirements.
One use case involved moving a cloud cost benchmarking tool to AWS to overcome scaling limitations in DigitalOcean’s App Platform and Managed PostgreSQL. By transitioning to an AWS stack including Amplify, Aurora Serverless v2, and ECS on Fargate, the platform achieved a significant reduction in query latency, dropping from 120ms to approximately 28ms. The migration was executed with zero downtime using dual-write ingestion pipelines and weighted DNS shifts.
Another instance highlighted the cost advantages of AWS Lightsail for smaller workloads. A user noted that a specific configuration of 2 CPUs, 2 GB RAM, and 60 GB of storage costs $12 per month on Lightsail, compared to $18 on DigitalOcean for a similar tier.
