Cloud security requires corporate responsibility beyond the provider

Günter Esch, Managing Director of SEPPmail – Deutschland GmbH, emphasizes that cloud providers are responsible for protecting their platforms, but companies remain responsible for securing their specific business processes and data. While large cloud providers maintain high security standards in their data centers, many security incidents stem from compromised accounts, incorrect permissions, or misconfigurations rather than attacks on the infrastructure itself.

Esch notes that transport encryption alone does not guarantee end-to-end confidentiality. To ensure secure business communication, companies must implement measures that address confidentiality, recipient authentication, and sender authenticity. Because providers cannot know which specific messages are sensitive or who is authorized to receive them, businesses must take active responsibility for configuring access rights and managing the flow of information leaving their systems.
