Cloudflare acquires Deno team and announces service changes

Cloudflare has announced the acquisition of the entire Deno team. As part of this transition, the development of the Deno JavaScript/TypeScript runtime will conclude in one year, after which the code will remain open source for the community to continue. During this final year, the team will provide monthly bug fixes and security updates.

The hosting service Deno Deploy will be shut down in six months. Cloudflare has committed to assisting paying customers with migrating their applications to Cloudflare Workers. Additionally, the JSR package registry will continue to operate, with its infrastructure moving to Cloudflare.

The acquisition aims to integrate Deno's expertise into Cloudflare's platform. Specifically, Cloudflare plans to merge celld and workerd to create a self-hostable runtime for Cloudflare Workers, addressing current limitations regarding distributed Durable Objects. The shift also impacts services like Netlify and Supabase, which utilize Deno for their Edge Functions; maintenance for these integrations by the Deno team is also scheduled to end in one year.
