Cloudflare launches AI agent payment and identity tools
Cloudflare has launched digital identity and payment capabilities for AI agents, aiming to facilitate autonomous commerce. This move addresses the technical challenge of providing AI agents with persistent identities and secure transaction abilities, which experts suggest is a major barrier to widespread adoption.
The development occurs amid a growing race to establish standards for agentic commerce. Major payment networks have introduced competing initiatives, including Visa’s Trusted Agent Protocol, Mastercard’s Agent Pay, and Google’s Agent Payments Protocol (AP2). Industry analysts warn that fragmentation among these protocols could hinder momentum if they fail to interoperate.
In its 2026 annual founders’ letter, Cloudflare noted a significant shift in internet usage. The company predicts that automated traffic will surpass human traffic by May 2026, a timeline pulled forward from previous forecasts. Cloudflare also highlighted an explosion of new web content driven by AI-assisted creators and a growing developer base using its platform.
