Cloudflare launches Wallets to enable AI agent payments

Cloudflare has announced the launch of Cloudflare Wallets, a new system designed to enable autonomous AI agents to conduct financial transactions on the web. Announced on August 4, 2026, the infrastructure aims to move AI agents from being mere data scrapers to active participants in the digital economy by allowing them to pay for services such as APIs, datasets, and web content.

The system utilizes a two-tier hierarchy to ensure human oversight and security. Account Wallets are owned by humans and hold the primary funds, while Virtual Wallets are delegated to individual AI agents. This structure allows users to set strict guardrails, including spending limits, approved merchant lists, and maximum transaction amounts per instance.

To facilitate trust and settlement, the system integrates stablecoin-backed identities and the x402 protocol, which is governed by major payment entities including Stripe, Visa, and Mastercard. These identities, managed via cloudflare.pay handles, provide agents with a persistent, human-readable identity that links back to their owners, addressing the challenge of verifying authorized spending in agent-native commerce.
