Cloudflare predicts humans will become a rounding error on the internet
Cloudflare predicts that human presence on the internet is rapidly becoming a statistical anomaly due to the exponential growth of machine-generated traffic. During a quarterly results presentation, Cloudflare CFO Thomas Seifert stated that if current trends continue, "humans will be a rounding error on the internet."
This shift is driven primarily by the rise of artificial intelligence. The volume of data exchanged between machines, particularly through AI-driven crawlers used to train large language models (LLMs), is outpacing human activity. Cloudflare noted that in June 2026, 52% of crawler requests were dedicated to AI training, compared to just 22% the previous year.
The company previously estimated that machine traffic would overtake human traffic by 2027, but this milestone was actually reached in May 2026, one year ahead of schedule. Projections suggest a ratio of 1,000 machine-generated data packets for every one human-generated packet within the next five years.
