Cloudflare reports AI bot traffic has surpassed human web traffic
Cloudflare has reported that automated web traffic, including AI bots, scrapers, and agents, surpassed human traffic for the first time in May. This milestone occurred much earlier than the company’s initial projection of 2027. CEO Matthew Prince noted that if current trends continue, automated traffic could be 1,000 times greater than human traffic within five years.
To address the infrastructure demands of this growth and the fact that bots do not engage with traditional advertising models, Cloudflare is proposing a direct payment scheme for AI companies. The initiative aims to revive the web’s “402 Required Payment” protocol, allowing website owners to charge AI bots for content access. Under this model, creators would receive micropayments for each bot access, funded by the subscription fees users pay to AI services. Cloudflare is collaborating with Coinbase and Stripe to develop the necessary micropayment processing infrastructure.
