Cloudflare reports AI bots now generate the majority of web traffic

Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince announced that AI‑driven bots have overtaken human users as the main source of web traffic. Data from the company’s monitoring platform shows that, as of 27 April 2026, bots accounted for about 57 % of all requests while humans made up roughly 43 %. Prince had expected this shift to occur by the end of 2027, noting that “the rise of what I call ‘agentic traffic’ has dramatically accelerated.”

The surge is driven by AI agents that crawl thousands of pages per request, increasing server load and distorting analytics for site owners. Prince highlighted Cloudflare’s experimental “pay‑to‑crawl” model, which would let AI providers pay for access while giving website operators control over usage. He also clarified that, when broader online activity such as app usage and media consumption is considered, human engagement still represents around 65 % of total internet activity.

The revelation has drawn reactions from other tech leaders, including Elon Musk’s brief comment of “Wow.” The development signals a fundamental change in how the internet is accessed and measured.
