Călărași and 16 localities form Moldova's largest amalgamation cluster

The city of Călărași and 16 surrounding localities in the Republic of Moldova have approved a voluntary amalgamation to form the country's largest administrative cluster. This new structure will unite 17 localities, creating a community of over 26,000 residents.

Authorities anticipate the merger will grant access to approximately 136 million lei in government financial incentives. These funds are intended for joint development projects focused on improving infrastructure and living conditions, including roads, water and sewage systems, street lighting, schools, and kindergartens. Residents believe a stronger, consolidated administration will better attract investment and funding that smaller, separate communities would struggle to obtain.

This move is part of a broader local public administration reform aimed at strengthening the capacity of communities to manage resources and implement development projects. According to the State Chancellery, over 770 mayoralties in Moldova have initiated voluntary amalgamation procedures, with 112 localities already deciding to unite around 24 regional centers.
