Club Brugge opens title defence with 3-0 win and €12 m signing

Club Brugge began the 2026‑2027 Jupiler Pro League season by beating newly promoted KV Kortrijk 3‑0. Hugo Vetlesen opened the scoring in the 30th minute, Carlos Forbs added a second in the 68th, and Nicolò Tresoldi completed the rout from the penalty spot.

Head coach Ivan Leko praised the performance but warned that the squad must stay humble, avoiding comparisons with Bayern Munich, and stressed the need for further reinforcements as the club prepares for the Champions League. He also highlighted the upcoming transfer window, noting that the team will wait until September for the market to close before finalising new signings.

In the summer market, Club Brugge secured a €12 million deal for 20‑year‑old Spanish winger Jan Virgil, signing him to a contract until 2031. The club continues to hunt for players in several positions.

The league itself will run with an 18‑team format and no playoffs, meaning the top four finishers qualify for European competition while the bottom two are relegated. Other Belgian clubs, such as KRC Genk, are also active in the transfer market, with Genk breaking its record by paying over €11 million for Rafiu Durosinmi.
