Italy faces healthcare challenges from aging population and digital shifts

Italy faces significant healthcare challenges driven by demographic shifts and technological evolution. Projections indicate that the population aged 65 and over will rise from 25.1% in 2026 to 34.6% by 2050. Additionally, the proportion of Italians living with at least one chronic condition reached 41.5% in 2024.

To address these trends, Club Santé Italie has emphasized the need for strengthened territorial healthcare, accelerated digital transformation, and increased public-private collaboration. Discussions at the French Embassy in Rome highlighted the importance of innovation to ensure system sustainability. Meanwhile, medical professionals are raising concerns regarding the role of artificial intelligence, asserting that while technology can support procedures, clinical judgment must remain an exclusively human responsibility.

Regional efforts are also underway to modernize infrastructure. In Calabria, the activation of community hospitals and houses is aimed at reducing emergency room pressure. In the Marche region, a new agreement with pharmacies will expand local services to include telemedicine and cancer screenings. However, some regional leaders have warned that infrastructure improvements must be accompanied by adequate digital tools and organizational support to avoid creating 'empty shells' in the healthcare network.
