Cláudio Castro targeted in Brazilian Federal Police operation

The Brazilian Federal Police have launched the second phase of ‘Operação Sem Refino’, targeting former Rio de Janeiro Governor Cláudio Castro. The operation involves sixteen search and seizure warrants issued by the Supreme Federal Court (STF) in Rio de Janeiro.

Investigators are looking into alleged fraud regarding the granting of environmental licenses for a refinery, as well as potential money laundering. The probe also covers suspicions of fraudulent management, tax evasion, currency evasion, market manipulation, and irregularities in the commercialization of fuels. This phase follows an initial investigation in May concerning an economic group suspected of benefiting Refit, formerly known as Refinaria de Manguinhos.

Legal counsel for Cláudio Castro has denied any involvement in irregularities related to Refit. The defense stated that the address targeted in Petrópolis has had no connection to the former governor for months and maintained that all administrative and legal acts performed during his tenure followed established legislation.
