Romania ambulance attack sparks debate over TikTok ban and disinformation
An ambulance crew in Recea-Cristur, Cluj County, was violently attacked with sticks, axes, and stones by a group of individuals. The assault was triggered by viral misinformation on TikTok regarding a myth about 'black ambulances' kidnapping children. The ambulance driver sustained an eye injury from broken glass, requiring surgery and a recovery period of at least three months.
Seven suspects, including six men and one woman, have been detained for 30 days. Authorities, including Secretary of State Raed Arafat, have emphasized the need to treat online disinformation with maximum seriousness to prevent real-world violence.
In response to the incident, the National Audiovisual Council (CNA) has requested that TikTok remove 90 videos related to the 'Black Ambulance' myth. Political reactions have also emerged, with MP Raluca Turcan suggesting that Romania should evaluate a potential ban on TikTok on national security grounds, while MP Ionel Bogdan has proposed creating a Special Parliamentary Commission to combat disinformation and requesting hearings with ANCOM.
