Cluj-Napoca authorities warn of rise in simulated begging
Authorities in Cluj-Napoca are raising alarms over an increase in sophisticated simulated begging. Recent incidents involved individuals faking disabilities to solicit money in crowded areas such as Mărăști and Mihai Viteazu markets.
In one instance, three individuals were caught using wheelchairs or bandaged hands to claim they needed funds for medical recovery, only to be seen walking to the police station on their own feet. Investigations suggest these networks often involve people traveling from other counties, such as Mureș, Brăila, or Galați, and sometimes utilize children to increase emotional impact on passersby.
So far this year, nearly 500 beggars have been identified in Cluj-Napoca, with confiscated sums reaching 40,000 lei. Local police have implemented a strategy involving undercover agents to monitor key locations and combat these fraudulent activities.
