Cluj-Napoca excavations to search for ancient Napoca forum

Archaeological excavations are set to begin in Cluj-Napoca this September near St. Michael's Church. The work is a preliminary measure ahead of metro construction in the city center.

Staff from the Transylvanian National History Museum will conduct excavations at a depth of 2.5 meters. Archaeologists hope to uncover Roman-era remains, potentially including the forum of the ancient city of Napoca.

While archaeological supervision will occur at all planned metro stations, intensive preliminary research is focused on four specific locations: the Main Square, the VIVO shopping center area, the Monostor district, and Avram Iancu Square. The Main Square station remains the most complex site, as final designs have been delayed due to the potential for significant Roman-era structures.
