Cluj-Napoca promotes free transit via physical activity

Cluj-Napoca Mayor Emil Boc is promoting the ‘Sports Festival’ initiative, specifically the ‘Biletul de sănătate’ (Health Ticket) project, which rewards physical activity with free public transportation.

Under the program, residents can earn a 7-day public transport pass by performing specific physical tasks at designated stations. At the Memorandumului Sud station, citizens can obtain a ticket by performing 20 squats, while at the Central station, they can earn one by cycling 400 meters on an installed bicycle. The machines are available daily between 8:00 and 22:00.

The initiative, supported by the City Hall and CTP Cluj-Napoca, aims to encourage an active lifestyle and reduce urban congestion by promoting public transit. Since 2020, the program has issued over 250,000 health tickets, with more than 47,000 distributed in 2025 alone.
