Cluj-Napoca secures 10.8 billion lei for metro project

The Cluj-Napoca City Hall has signed a financing contract for the first stage of the Cluj Metro Line 1 project. The contract, valued at 10.87 billion lei (approximately 2 billion euros), was signed with the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure under the 2021–2027 Transport Program.

The current funding phase covers 17.8 kilometers of infrastructure, with approximately 8.8 kilometers scheduled for completion by the end of 2029. The total planned metro line will span 21.03 kilometers, featuring 19 stations and a depot. The project aims to connect the commune of Florești with major districts in Cluj-Napoca, the city center, and key economic zones.

This investment is intended to increase metropolitan public transport capacity, reduce travel times, and decrease road congestion by shifting commuters from private cars to public transit. The funding includes non-reimbursable European funds, state budget allocations, and contributions from the Cluj-Napoca municipality.
