BFMTV faces internal unrest and accusations of ideological drift
BFMTV and its parent company, CMA Media, are facing significant internal and external pressure following accusations of promoting far-right ideas. Over 160 employees from Nextprod, including technicians and production staff, signed an open letter denouncing a “slow ideological drift” within the channel. The staff expressed concern over the normalization of extremist rhetoric, citing the use of terms like “racailles” and the hosting of controversial figures without sufficient pushback.
In response to allegations from political figures and staff regarding the relaying of racist discourse, CMA Media announced new measures to ensure pluralism. These include the creation of an “invités cell” to centralize interview requests and the monthly publication of a pluralism barometer to track the diversity of guests and viewpoints. Management stated these steps are intended to defend the channels against what they term “unjust” accusations rather than a change in editorial line.
Simultaneously, journalists at the network have reported increasing hostility and physical threats from the public during field reporting. Some staff members have resorted to using security escorts or anonymizing their identities on screen to avoid identification following recent controversies.
