CMFRI explores Vembanad Lake ecology via research cruise
The ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) conducted an ecological cruise through Kerala’s Vembanad Lake as part of the Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 campaign and World Tourism Day. The expedition included students, researchers, and tourism professionals, traveling from Marine Drive to Kadamakkudy across 15 islands.
Participants observed century-old mangroves, which scientists identified as vital natural barriers against storm surges and coastal flooding, as well as essential carbon sinks and nurseries for aquatic life. The tour also highlighted the Pokkali farming system in Pizhala, where salt-tolerant rice and aquaculture are integrated based on the estuary's salinity cycles. The excursion aimed to demonstrate the interconnectedness of wetlands, fisheries, and traditional livelihoods while noting the environmental pressures facing the ecosystem.
