CMFRI scientists discover new conger eel species in Arabian Sea
Scientists from the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) have identified a new species of conger eel in the deep waters of the Arabian Sea. Named ‘Ariosoma cmfriense’ in honor of the institute’s 80th anniversary, the species was discovered off the coast of Kollam at a depth of approximately 300 metres.
The identification was achieved through morphological studies and molecular analysis, distinguishing it from the 12 known Ariosoma species in the region. Key physical characteristics include a total vertebral count of 135, 127–130 lateral-line pores, and unique fine black speckling below the lateral line.
This discovery was conducted as part of the Deep Ocean Mission, a national programme under India’s Ministry of Earth Sciences. Researchers noted that the find strengthens scientific understanding of deep-sea biodiversity and provides essential baseline data for resource conservation. The holotype specimen has been deposited at the CMFRI Marine Biodiversity Museum.
