CMFRI supplies one million mussel seeds to Maharashtra
The ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), based in Kochi, Kerala, has supplied one million hatchery-produced green mussel seeds to Maharashtra over the last six months. This initiative, conducted under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), aims to promote sustainable coastal farming and create alternative livelihood opportunities for fishing and tribal communities.
In addition to the mussel seeds, CMFRI has provided one lakh oyster seeds to the state. The seeds were produced at the institute’s bivalve hatchery at the Vizhinjam Regional Centre in Thiruvananthapuram. The project is being implemented with support from Maharashtra’s Mangrove and Marine Biodiversity Conservation Foundation.
To ensure the success of the program, CMFRI has trained 30 officials from Maharashtra’s Mangrove Cell in nursery rearing and farming techniques. These officials will assist in transferring technology and providing practical guidance to local prospective farmers.
