CMPC receives preliminary license for R$ 27 billion cellulose project in Rio Grande do Sul

The Chilean multinational CMPC has been granted a preliminary license by the State Environmental Protection Foundation (Fepam) for 'Projeto Natureza' in Barra do Ribeiro, Rio Grande do Sul. Considered the largest private investment in the history of the state, the project involves an estimated R$ 27 billion investment.

The new industrial complex is designed to produce between 2.5 million and 3 million tons of short-fiber eucalyptus cellulose annually. The project also includes logistical infrastructure, such as a dedicated export terminal at the Port of Rio Grande and improvements to the ports of Pelotas and Rio Grande.

Employment projections indicate the project could create up to 12,000 jobs during the peak of the construction phase. During the operational phase, it is expected to generate approximately 6,000 jobs, including 800 direct positions and 1,500 permanent outsourced roles. Additionally, the project includes the creation of an ecological park within the Barba Negra Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN) for conservation and environmental education.
