CMPC to sell Chilean corrugated business to Smurfit Westrock for US$420 million

CMPC has reached an agreement to sell its corrugated packaging business in Chile to Smurfit Westrock for US$420 million. The transaction includes the transfer of the subsidiaries Envases Impresos Cordillera and Chilena de Moldeados (Chimolsa).

The deal encompasses several production assets, including a recycled paper plant, molded cellulose tray units, and three corrugated cardboard conversion plants located in Buin, Til Til, and Osorno. Additionally, the acquisition includes a logistics network consisting of 12 collection points for paper and cardboard recovery. The sale involves approximately 1,500 workers, though the Softys plant in Puente Alto is excluded from the transaction.

For CMPC, the sale is part of a long-term strategy to concentrate capital and resources on its core cellulose and large-scale paper businesses. For Smurfit Westrock, the acquisition aims to consolidate market leadership in Chile and strengthen its position in South America, integrating recycled paper supplies with its operations in Argentina, Peru, and Ecuador.

The completion of the deal is subject to regulatory approval from Chile’s National Economic Prosecutor's Office (Fiscalía Nacional Económica).
