CMPD officer shoots and kills man during foot chase in Charlotte

A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) officer shot and killed a man on Friday afternoon north of Uptown Charlotte. According to Police Chief Estella Patterson, officers responded to a 911 call regarding a disturbance and observed what appeared to be a criminal transaction at a bus stop.

During the encounter, one individual fled on foot. Chief Patterson stated that the man pulled a gun from his waistband during the chase, prompting an officer to fire due to an “imminent threat.” The man, identified by relatives as 36-year-old Curtis Massey, later died at a hospital. While police confirmed a gun was found near the body, they noted the man did not fire a shot. A relative of Massey acknowledged he had a weapon but claimed he had found it in a dumpster.

The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) will investigate the incident and report findings to the Mecklenburg District Attorney. The involved officer has been placed on paid leave.
