CMS launches $275 million Nurses for Nursing Homes initiative

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has introduced the ‘Nurses for Nursing Homes’ initiative, a $275 million program designed to recruit and retain nursing professionals in long-term care facilities. The program is a joint effort involving all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

To address staffing shortages in rural areas and high-need communities, the initiative offers eligible nursing students and licensed nurses up to $40,000 in student loan repayment and a $10,000 stipend. In exchange, participants must commit to working at least 30 hours per week in a qualified nursing home for three years.

CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz stated the program is funded through civil monetary penalties collected by CMS and states, rather than taxpayer funds. To qualify, applicants must hold an active registered nurse or licensed vocational nurse license and must not have worked in a nursing home for at least 60 days prior to applying.
