CMS launches new healthcare payment initiatives and cost-reduction measures

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is implementing new initiatives aimed at improving healthcare delivery and reducing costs. Through a new four-year contract with Mathematica and Deloitte, the CMS Innovation Center has launched the Learning Insights for Action (LIA) project. This initiative is designed to help the agency scale effective healthcare payment and service delivery models by using data and evidence to identify successful strategies and implement them more broadly.

Additionally, CMS is working to reduce unnecessary Medicare spending in high-cost hospital settings. Proposed changes to the Outpatient Prospective Payment System (OPPS) rule aim to address price distortions by expanding site-neutral payments for certain imaging services and narrowing the inpatient-only list. These measures are intended to prevent Medicare from paying higher rates for the same services simply based on the location of care, a practice that currently incentivizes vertical consolidation in the healthcare market.
