CMVM issues 280,000 euros in fines to auditors in 2025

The Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM) has issued 10 fines totaling 280,000 euros to 11 defendants in 2025 following nine administrative proceedings in the auditing sector. After the suspension of 131,250 euros, the effective non-suspended amount stands at 148,750 euros.

According to the 2025/2026 audit quality control report, the proceedings covered 107 infractions. These included 35 very serious violations, primarily concerning auditor independence, and 57 serious violations related to evidence documentation and professional skepticism.

Supervision activity has increased significantly, with 112 new activities opened during the 2025/2026 cycle compared to 46 in the previous year. The regulator closed 85 actions, identifying 181 irregularities in total. Inês Drumond, Vice-President of the CMVM Board, noted that the rise in detected irregularities is largely due to the reinforcement of continuous supervision, which allows for more systematic monitoring of reported information and auditor compliance.
