Căn nhà không mái che: Drama explores domestic violence and family crisis
The first episode of the Vietnamese drama ‘Căn nhà không mái che’ (The House Without a Roof) explores themes of domestic violence and family instability. Set in 2009, the story follows Thơ, a young girl struggling with the fallout of her parents' fractured relationship.
Thơ’s mother, Hạnh (played by Huyền Lizzie), suffers severe physical injuries, including a splenic hemorrhage, due to repeated beatings by her husband, Bình/Toản (played by Doãn Quốc Đam). The violence is fueled by the father’s gambling addiction and alcoholism, which has also led to the depletion of the family’s savings.
While Hạnh initially hesitates to leave due to her concern for her children, the escalating abuse leads her to demand a divorce. Thơ, witnessing her mother’s suffering and her father’s erratic behavior, seeks support from her classmate Sơn and eventually assists her mother by taking a divorce petition to the post office.
