Cần Thơ teen V. T. M. T confesses to stealing 1.1 billion VND safe, loses money in crypto scam

A 21‑year‑old woman, V. T. M. T, born in 2005 and resident of the Saintard hamlet in Tân Thạnh commune, Cần Thơ, admitted to stealing a safe belonging to her aunt, P. T. K. A. The safe contained roughly 1.1 billion Vietnamese đồng in cash, foreign currency (U.S. and Singapore dollars) and gold of various purities.

Police recovered the empty safe on 30 July after it was found discarded under a river near the victim’s house. V. T. M. T sold the contents, converted them to cash and transferred the money to a man she met on a social‑media platform to invest in virtual currency. The man disappeared with the funds, leaving her with a total loss. Realising she had been scammed, she voluntarily reported the crime to the Tân Thạnh police on 31 July. Authorities recorded her confession, prepared the case file and noted the incident as part of a growing pattern of thefts linked to cryptocurrency investment schemes.

The police emphasized that only the Vietnamese đồng is legal tender in Vietnam and warned the public against participating in unregulated crypto or blockchain projects that promise high returns.
