Brazilian Catholic bishops issue warning ahead of 2026 presidential runoff

A group of Catholic bishops in Brazil has issued an open letter ahead of the 2026 presidential runoff scheduled for October 25. The manifesto, signed by dozens of religious leaders from various dioceses, warns that one of the competing candidacies poses a threat to democracy, national sovereignty, and the common good.

While the document does not always name candidates explicitly, the religious leaders direct criticisms toward the platform of Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL). Key points of contention include his opposition to ending the 6x1 work schedule, proposals for expanded firearm access, and stances on climate change. The bishops argue these positions contradict the Social Doctrine of the Church.

In contrast, the religious leaders highlight the current administration under President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) for its commitment to the poor, environmental preservation, and respect for the Constitution. The National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB) also released a message emphasizing the importance of free, conscious, and secret voting, while condemning any attempts to pressure or negotiate votes.
