CNBB calls for transparency amid Brazilian Supreme Court crisis

The National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB) has expressed concern regarding recent events involving the Supreme Federal Court (STF) and the Federal Police (PF). In a statement released on September 10, the entity called for truth, justice, and the preservation of democratic institutions, emphasizing that the independence and balance between powers are essential for social peace.

The CNBB requested that highly relevant institutional matters be examined by the STF Plenary in a collective, public, and transparent manner. The organization stressed the importance of due process, noting that institutional authority is strengthened when facts are investigated with independence and impartiality, ensuring no one is above the law or condemned without the right to a defense.

The manifestation follows a judicial impasse where Minister André Mendonça ordered the removal of the Director-General of the Federal Police, Andrei Rodrigues, and the Director of Intelligence, Leandro Almada. While Minister Flávio Dino subsequently ordered their reinstatement, STF President Edson Fachin has suspended both decisions and referred the matter to the Plenary. An extraordinary session is scheduled for September 15 to resolve the controversy.
