CNBB President Jaime Spengler criticizes Judiciary politicization

Cardinal Jaime Spengler, president of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB), has criticized the perceived 'politicization' within Brazil's Superior Courts. During a meeting with journalists in Brasília, Spengler described the current relationship between the three branches of government as delicate and tense.

He emphasized that the Judiciary must function as a balancer, making decisions strictly based on the Constitution. Spengler also noted that the Catholic Church holds a responsibility to address issues affecting the country and will not remain silent on matters involving its core values.

The CNBB previously issued a statement on September 10 expressing concern regarding the Supreme Federal Court (STF) and called for investigations into recent events to ensure all actors remain subject to the law.
