CNBS warns Honduras against unregulated pyramid and Ponzi schemes
The National Banking and Insurance Commission (CNBS) of Honduras has issued a warning to the public regarding the risks of pyramid and Ponzi schemes. Commissioner Gustavo Solórzano emphasized that these fraudulent structures often operate outside the regulated financial system, meaning they are not under the direct supervision of the CNBS.
Solórzano noted that these schemes rely on the continuous recruitment of new participants to sustain payments to earlier investors. He urged citizens to be skeptical of offers promising high, rapid returns, particularly those that do not provide clear authorization for fund collection.
Addressing the specific case of HLV, the CNBS clarified that the entity was not a supervised institution. Solórzano indicated there are signs that HLV may lack legal recognition as a formal commercial society in Honduras. He advised the public to verify commercial registries and municipal records before committing funds. The Commissioner also noted that the Public Ministry is the body responsible for investigating fraud and determining legal accountability.
