Công Phượng returns to V. League as Đồng Nai FC captain

Striker Nguyễn Công Phượng made his return to the V. League during the 2026/27 season opener, playing for Đồng Nai FC in a match against Thể Công Viettel. After a three-season absence from Vietnam's top flight, the 1995-born forward entered the game as a substitute in the 61st minute.

Despite Đồng Nai FC suffering a 0-2 defeat and playing with only 10 men, Công Phượng's performance earned praise from head coach Nguyễn Việt Thắng. The coach noted that because the player had not participated in pre-season preparations with the club, he was kept on the bench to start.

Coach Việt Thắng expressed confidence in his decision to appoint Công Phượng as captain, stating, “I believe giving the captain's armband to Công Phượng was not the wrong person. I want him to maintain that to lead this collective.” The coach highlighted the player's composure and attitude on the pitch as standout qualities during his limited time on the field.
