CNMC implements permanent energy market surveillance system
The National Commission for Markets and Competition (CNMC) is implementing a permanent, comprehensive surveillance system for the energy sector. This move aims to prevent market abuses amid price escalations driven by geopolitical instability in the Middle East.
The enhanced oversight will cover fuel, electricity, and natural gas markets. Under expanded mandates from government anti-crisis decrees, the CNMC is authorized to request detailed information regarding prices, sales volumes, and procurement costs from all agents in the supply chain, ranging from major oil companies and refineries to individual gas stations.
Led by Juan José Ganuza, the agency is also developing strategies to better utilize existing price databases and will maintain continuous monitoring of profit margins for both wholesale companies and retail service stations.
