CNN joins Google’s News AI pilot through multiyear licensing deal

CNN has entered into a multiyear licensing agreement with Google to provide its journalism for use in experimental generative AI features. The partnership is part of Google’s News AI pilot program, which has expanded to include more than 400 publications globally, such as Axios, the Financial Times, and Forbes.

Under the terms of the deal, Google will use CNN’s content to power features like AI-generated article summaries and customizable audio briefings. These tools are designed to include clear attribution and direct links back to the original reporting to help drive audience engagement. While the specific financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, CNN will receive compensation for the use of its intellectual property.

This collaboration comes as news publishers seek new revenue streams and legal protections amidst declining referral traffic caused by AI-generated search answers. CNN’s senior vice president of strategic partnerships, Sam Felix, stated that the alliance opens “new pathways for audiences to access CNN’s unparalleled journalism while being compensated for the delivery and use of our unique intellectual property in connection with AI products.”
