CNN commentators clash over causes of French unrest
During a CNN panel discussion, commentators Scott Jennings and Leigh McGowan debated the underlying causes of recent riots and violence in France.
Jennings attributed the unrest, which included looting, property destruction, and damage to historical landmarks, to Europe’s migrant crisis. He characterized the violence as an attempt to undermine Western civilization, noting the presence of Palestinian and communist flags during the demonstrations. He also cited reports from Marseille suggesting that Jewish-owned businesses were targeted while Muslim-owned businesses remained untouched.
In contrast, McGowan argued that the unrest was driven by economic inequality and student dissatisfaction. She attributed the protests to issues such as inadequate education, low wages, and a lack of resources for those not in the upper class, rather than migration patterns.
