CNN threatens legal action over Air Force One access denial

CNN is threatening further legal action against the Trump administration after being excluded from the presidential television press pool for travel on Air Force One. In a letter to Justice Department attorney Michael K. Velchik, CNN attorney Theodore J. Boutrous Jr. characterized the exclusion as an unlawful attempt to retaliate against the network based on its news coverage.

The dispute follows a month-old ban on CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from White House grounds, which the administration justified by labeling their content “fake news.” While a federal judge recently issued a preliminary injunction to restore access to White House grounds, the ruling did not resolve the exclusion from the rotating TV pool that covers presidential travel.

CNN argues that it has maintained uninterrupted access to the Oval Office and Air Force One for 45 years, asserting that these spaces belong to the American public rather than any specific administration. The network has set a deadline of 5 p.m. Eastern on Thursday for the administration to provide written confirmation that it will abandon the policy of excluding CNN from its assigned pool duties.
