Brazil's CNPq launches R$60 million endometriosis research call
The Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq) has opened a public call to fund research on endometriosis, pelvic pain and menstrual health, with a focus on solutions for the Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS). The initiative provides a total of R$60 million in funding—R$50 million from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation and R$10 million from the group Alana—to create a national research network. Applications are accepted until 12 August and must address one of five thematic axes: cause and prevention, diagnosis, treatment, biorepository of biological materials, and social impact. The call requires the project coordinator to hold a doctorate and be formally linked to an institution. Results are scheduled for 2 December.
Data cited by the Alana group indicate that six in ten students who menstruate experience strong or moderate cramps, and four in ten miss school each month because of menstrual pain. Women with endometriosis can lose up to 10.8 hours of work per week, underscoring the public‑health relevance of the research program.
