CNTE rejects Mexican government proposal for new teacher job assignments
The capital-based sections of the Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación (CNTE) have rejected a federal government consultation aimed at designing a new method for assigning teaching positions. This new system is intended to replace the current USICAMM framework.
During a virtual press conference, CNTE leaders demanded a return to a bilateral appointment system. They propose that 50 percent of teacher appointments be proposed by unions and the remaining 50 percent by the government, citing the Federal Labor Law.
Pedro Hernández, leader of CNTE Section 9, emphasized the need for mechanisms that recognize seniority and professionalization. He also accused leaders of the Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación (SNTE) of complicity with the Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP) in the sale of teaching positions. The CNTE further called for explicit recognition of democratic union representation and for the new mechanism to respect the studies of normalista graduates.
