CNTE teachers' union blocks major roads in Tijuana and Mexico City over education reforms

Teachers from the Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación (CNTE) and residents of the Maclovío Rojas neighborhood blocked the Tijuana‑Tecate free road near Ojo de Agua, using vehicles and tires to create a severe traffic jam. CNTE municipal coordinator Gerónimo Castro Fuentes said the action was taken after negotiations with the federal government stalled, demanding the repeal of the education reform and the 2007 ISSSTE law. The blockade could continue depending on outcomes of national talks.

Since early June, CNTE activists have also staged road blockades in Mexico City, closing arteries such as Paseo de la Reforma, Insurgentes and the Circuito Interior, as well as the Mexico City International Airport and Estadio Azteca. Their protest, aimed at pressuring President‑elect Claudia Sheinbaum, has been linked to economic losses estimated at more than 500 million pesos and affecting around five thousand businesses in the historic centre. The city and federal governments are considering compensation measures for affected merchants and workers.
