Co Do Village becomes known as a painter community near Hanoi
Co Do, a village located approximately 70 km from Hanoi, has become widely recognized as a “painter village” due to its deep-rooted tradition of fine arts. The community, consisting of nearly 1,000 households, features a widespread passion for painting that spans generations, involving everyone from professional artists and members of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association to farmers and children.
The movement was significantly influenced by the late artist Nguyen Sy Tot, who taught local residents and children how to paint using simple, everyday materials. This cultural legacy has resulted in a community where many families have two or even three generations dedicated to the craft. The artwork produced often depicts local scenery, such as bamboo groves, dykes, fields, and daily village life.
