Co-housing initiatives launched in Ruvo di Puglia and Borgo Maggiore
Local authorities in Ruvo di Puglia, Italy, and Borgo Maggiore, San Marino, are implementing co-housing initiatives to address housing shortages and social isolation.
In Ruvo di Puglia, the municipal government has approved guidelines for a co-housing service designed to support seniors over 65, young adults transitioning out of educational communities, and families in extreme marginality. The program aims to provide dignity and mutual support through shared spaces like kitchens and living areas while maintaining private quarters. Access is managed through individual applications or referrals from social, judicial, or health services, followed by a personalized assistance project.
In San Marino, a public meeting in Borgo Maggiore highlighted the co-housing model as a way to reduce costs and rebuild community ties. Supported by Law 87 of 2026 regarding Strategic Territorial Planning, the initiative introduces a collective housing function. The framework aims to improve housing availability for young families and provide support for elderly citizens. An upcoming implementing decree is expected to establish specific requirements, incentives, and assignment criteria for these projects.
